π Reading & Study Skills for College & Career Transition
A supportive Adult Basic Education course that bridges the gap between finishing your basic education or high-school equivalency and succeeding in college or advanced training. Postsecondary work asks for a step up in reading and study skills β and this course builds exactly those: active reading, note-taking, memory and time-management systems, critical thinking, academic writing, and the confidence to navigate college as an adult learner. If you're ready for the next step, this course helps you take it.
π About This Course
This course is for adults getting ready for the next step β starting community college, entering a certificate or training program, or moving into work that demands stronger reading and learning skills. Maybe you just earned your GED/HSE, maybe you're returning to school after years away, or maybe you want to strengthen your study skills before you enroll. Wherever you're starting, this course meets you there and treats you as the capable adult you are.
It's a transition course: it builds the academic reading and study skills that postsecondary programs assume you have β the ones that are rarely taught directly. You'll practice reading complex texts actively, taking useful notes, remembering what you study, managing your time, thinking critically, writing at a college level, and preparing for placement tests and enrollment. These skills pay off in any program and any career.
π‘ How this fits with the other ABE courses
This is the bridge to postsecondary. The GED / HSE Prep course prepares you for the equivalency exam; the Reading & Writing course builds foundational literacy; the Career Exploration & Pathways course helps you choose a direction and plan. This course builds the reading and study skills to succeed once you get to college or training. If you're headed to postsecondary study, this is your on-ramp.
β οΈ A note on placement tests & specifics
This course builds transferable reading and study skills that help you succeed in college and on placement tests. It is not official placement-test or admissions-exam preparation and contains no real test questions β all practice is original. Every college and program is different, so always verify current placement tests, admissions requirements, programs, and financial-aid rules with the specific college or training provider and official sources (for financial aid, studentaid.gov).

π± You are college material
If a part of you wonders whether you belong in college or an advanced program β you do. Adult and returning students succeed every day, and study skills are learned, not inborn. You bring maturity, motivation, and life experience that younger students often lack. This course gives you the academic tools to match that drive. One step at a time, you're getting ready.
π The 12 Lessons
Work through the lessons in order β each builds on the last, from reading to learn, to study systems, to academic and critical thinking, to the transition itself. Each lesson adds a page to your "My Transition Plan" folder, which becomes your capstone.

π― Standards Alignment
This course supports the transition to postsecondary education and training, a key goal of adult education, and is designed to be useful to programs funded under WIOA Title II (the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act). It targets the transition and workforce-preparation activities named in the law β reading complex text, critical thinking, using information, and self-management.
- WIOA transition & workforce preparation: using information, critical thinking, self-management, learning-to-learn, and communication
- CCRS β College & Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (reading complex informational and academic text; writing; speaking & listening) β the higher levels that signal college readiness
- NRS β supports Adult Secondary Education (ASE) functioning levels, transition outcomes, and Measurable Skill Gains reporting
- Northstar Digital Literacy β where lessons involve online research, learning platforms, and applications
Framework-general; frameworks (WIOA/AEFLA/CCRS/NRS/Northstar) apply nationally. This course builds transferable reading and study skills; it is not official placement-test or admissions-exam prep and uses only original practice. Verify current placement tests, admissions, programs, and financial-aid rules with the specific college/training provider and official sources (studentaid.gov). Confirm current specifics with the Nevada Department of Education / CRAELO and your state's WIOA plan.
π§ How to Study This Course
- One lesson at a time, in order. There's no clock on you. The skills build on each other.
- Practice on real material. Try the strategies on an actual article, textbook chapter, or something from a program you're considering β that's where they stick.
- Keep one folder. Start a "My Transition Plan" folder (paper or digital). Each lesson adds a page, and together they become your capstone.
- Use these skills as you learn them. This is a study-skills course, so apply each technique to your own studying right away β including studying this course.
- Keep the journal. Five minutes of reflection after each lesson doubles what you remember (and models good study habits).
- Connect with support. Community-college advisors, adult-education programs, and campus resources exist to help adult and returning students succeed. Using them is smart.
π§ A word before you begin
Deciding to pursue college or advanced training as an adult takes courage, and it's one of the most life-changing choices you can make. You don't have to be a "natural student" β you have to build a few learnable skills and keep going. Add the word yet: "I don't know how to study a textbook yet." Let's get you ready for the next step. π±
