π English & Math for Transportation & Logistics (CDL Pathway)
A practical Adult Basic Education bridge course that builds the real reading, math, communication, and workplace skills a commercial driving and logistics career depends on β taught in the context of the road. This is an Integrated Education & Training (IET) bridge: it gets you ready for CDL training and the job by strengthening the underlying skills, so you can walk into a training program and a new career with confidence.
π About This Course
This course is for adults who are interested in driving and logistics work β truck driving, delivery, warehouse and logistics roles β and want to build the reading and math skills the field uses before (or alongside) formal CDL training. It treats you as the capable adult you are, and it keeps everything practical and connected to the real work.
It's an IET bridge, which means it combines adult basic skills (reading and math) with employability skills, all contextualized to transportation and logistics. You'll read the kinds of documents and signs the job uses, do the everyday math of weights, time, fuel, and pay, and learn how the CDL pathway works β so the occupational training ahead feels familiar instead of overwhelming.
β οΈ Important β please read: what this course is and is NOT
This is a foundations and preparation bridge. It builds the reading, math, and workplace skills that support the CDL pathway. It is:
- NOT the CDL (commercial driver's license) itself, and it does not grant any license or certification.
- NOT official CDL-exam preparation, and it does not contain real exam questions. All practice here is original and focuses on the underlying reading and math skills.
- NOT a substitute for ELDT-compliant training (Entry-Level Driver Training), the DOT medical exam (physical), or the state knowledge and skills (behind-the-wheel) exams β all of which are still required to earn a CDL.
Requirements change and vary by state. Always verify current requirements with your state DMV, the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, fmcsa.dot.gov), and an approved CDL training program. A one-stop American Job Center can help with training and funding.
What You'll Be Able to Do
- Describe careers in transportation and logistics and how drivers get paid
- Understand the CDL pathway and its requirements (in general terms β verify current specifics)
- Read logs, manifests, bills of lading, road signs, and safety regulations
- Follow step-by-step instructions and hours-of-service rules
- Communicate clearly with dispatch, customers, and the team
- Do the everyday math of weights, loads, time, distance, fuel, and pay
- Build safety and pre-trip inspection vocabulary and awareness
- Learn how to study the CDL manual effectively
- Make your own plan toward CDL training and a driving career
Who This Course Is For
- Adult learners exploring or preparing for a commercial driving / logistics career
- People about to start or considering CDL training who want to strengthen reading & math first
- Workforce, IET, tutoring, and classroom programs β every lesson includes paired and group options
- Tutors and teachers delivering a contextualized IET bridge alongside occupational training
π‘ This pairs with other ABE courses
This bridge leans on, and cross-links, its siblings rather than repeating them: Math & Numeracy for math foundations, Workforce Readiness for rΓ©sumΓ©s, interviews, and soft skills, Career Exploration & Pathways for exploring and planning, and Reading & Writing for literacy. Use them together for the strongest start.
π The 12 Lessons
Work through the lessons in order β each builds on the last, moving from understanding the industry, to reading and communicating on the job, to the math of the road, to safety and a plan. Each lesson adds a page to your "My CDL Career Plan" folder, which becomes your capstone.
Module 1 Β· The Industry & Getting Started
Explore careers in transportation and logistics, understand the CDL pathway, and decide if this work fits you.
Module 2 Β· Reading & Communication on the Job
Read the documents, signs, and rules the job depends on, and communicate clearly with dispatch, customers, and the team.
Module 3 Β· Math for the Road
Build the practical math the job uses daily β weights and measures, time and fuel, and the money side of driving.
Module 4 Β· Safety, Readiness & Next Steps
Build safety and inspection literacy, learn how to study for the CDL knowledge exam, and make your own career plan.

This is an Integrated Education & Training (IET) bridge β a contextualized on-ramp to occupational CDL training. It pairs especially well with Math & Numeracy, Workforce Readiness, and Career Exploration & Pathways. It is not the CDL and not official exam prep β verify all requirements with your state DMV, the FMCSA, and an approved training program.
π― Standards Alignment
This course is designed as an Integrated Education & Training (IET) bridge useful to programs funded under WIOA Title II (the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act). IET combines adult education and literacy, workforce-preparation activities, and occupational training in a single, contextualized program β here, the adult-education and workforce-prep components for the transportation/CDL pathway.
- WIOA IET & workforce preparation: contextualized reading and numeracy, following instructions, communication, self-management, and using information
- CCRS β College & Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (reading informational/technical text such as logs, manifests, and regulations; mathematical practices)
- NRS β supports Educational Functioning Levels (ABE/ASE) and Measurable Skill Gains reporting
- Northstar Digital Literacy β where lessons involve electronic logging, online applications, or job platforms
Framework-general; frameworks (WIOA/AEFLA/CCRS/NRS/Northstar) apply nationally. This is a foundations/prep bridge β not the CDL, not official CDL-exam prep, and not a substitute for ELDT-compliant training, the DOT physical, or the state knowledge and skills exams. All practice items are original and target underlying reading/math skills. Verify current requirements with your state DMV and the FMCSA (fmcsa.dot.gov) and an approved program, and confirm program specifics with the Nevada Department of Education / CRAELO and your state's WIOA plan.
π§ How to Study This Course
- One lesson at a time, in order. There's no clock on you. The skills build on each other.
- Connect it to the real job. Every lesson uses real trucking documents, signs, and math β picture yourself doing the work.
- Keep one folder. Start a "My CDL Career Plan" folder (paper or digital). Each lesson adds a page, and together they become your capstone plan.
- Use the official sources. Get your state's CDL manual (free from the DMV) and check requirements at the DMV and fmcsa.dot.gov. This bridge builds skills; those are the authorities.
- Keep the journal. Five minutes of reflection after each lesson doubles what you remember.
- Ask for help. American Job Centers, community colleges, and approved CDL schools offer help and sometimes funding. Using them is smart.
π§ A word before you begin
Driving for a living is a real, respected career that keeps the country running β and the skills to get there are learnable, one step at a time. If reading dense rules or doing the math has felt hard before, that's exactly what this bridge is for. Add the word yet: "I can't read a logbook yet." Let's get you ready for the road. π±
