🩺 English & Math for Healthcare (CNA / Nursing Pathway)

A practical Adult Basic Education bridge course that builds the real reading, medical vocabulary, math, communication, and professionalism skills an entry-level healthcare career depends on β€” in the context of caregiving. This is an Integrated Education & Training (IET) bridge: it gets you ready for Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training and the job by strengthening the underlying skills, so you can walk into a training program and a caring career with confidence.

πŸ“š About This Course

This course is for adults drawn to caring work β€” becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), home health aide, or starting on the path toward nursing β€” who want to build the reading and math skills the field uses before (or alongside) formal CNA training. It treats you as the capable adult you are, and it keeps everything practical and connected to real care.

It's an IET bridge, which means it combines adult basic skills (reading, vocabulary, and math) with employability and professionalism skills, all contextualized to healthcare. You'll learn the medical words and abbreviations you'll encounter, read care procedures and safety steps, practice the numeracy the work uses, and build the communication and professionalism that caregiving requires β€” so the occupational training ahead feels familiar instead of overwhelming.

⚠️ Important β€” please read: what this course is and is NOT

This is a foundations and preparation bridge. It builds the reading, vocabulary, math, and professionalism skills that support the CNA pathway. It is:

  • NOT the CNA certification itself, and it does not grant any certification or license.
  • NOT official CNA competency-exam preparation, and it does not contain real exam questions. All practice here is original and focuses on underlying reading, vocabulary, and math skills.
  • NOT a substitute for a state-approved CNA training program, the required clinical (hands-on) hours, the competency exam, or a background check β€” all of which are still required to become a CNA.
  • NOT medical training or advice. In particular, medication administration is beyond the CNA role and is not taught here; any numbers involving vital signs appear only as reading-and-recording practice, never as clinical instruction.

Requirements change and vary by state. Always verify current requirements with your state's nursing/health authority (often a state nurse aide registry) and an approved training program. A one-stop American Job Center can help with training and funding.

What You'll Be Able to Do

  • Describe careers in healthcare and the CNA β†’ LPN β†’ RN ladder
  • Understand the CNA pathway and its requirements (in general terms β€” verify current specifics)
  • Read and understand common medical vocabulary and abbreviations
  • Follow care procedures and infection-control/safety steps in order
  • Communicate with dignity and respect with patients, families, and the care team
  • Understand observing, reporting, documentation, and HIPAA/privacy basics
  • Do the everyday numeracy of the job β€” measurements, time, shifts, and conversions
  • Understand professionalism and ethics in care
  • Learn how to study for the CNA competency exam, and make your own career plan

Who This Course Is For

  • Adult learners exploring or preparing for a CNA / caregiving career
  • People about to start or considering CNA training who want to strengthen reading & math first
  • Workforce, IET, tutoring, and classroom programs β€” every lesson includes paired and group options
  • Tutors and teachers delivering a contextualized IET bridge alongside occupational training

πŸ’‘ This pairs with other ABE courses

This bridge leans on, and cross-links, its siblings rather than repeating them: Math & Numeracy for math foundations, Workforce Readiness for rΓ©sumΓ©s, interviews, and soft skills, Career Exploration & Pathways for exploring and planning, and Reading & Writing for literacy. Use them together for the strongest start.

πŸ“– The 12 Lessons

Work through the lessons in order β€” each builds on the last, moving from understanding the field, to reading and communicating in care, to the math of healthcare, to professionalism and a plan. Each lesson adds a page to your "My Healthcare Career Plan" folder, which becomes your capstone.

Module 1 Β· The Field & Getting Started

Explore careers in healthcare, understand the CNA pathway, and decide if caregiving fits you.

Module 2 Β· Reading & Communication in Care

Build medical vocabulary, read and follow care procedures safely, and communicate with patients, families, and the team.

Module 3 Β· Math for Healthcare

Build the practical numeracy the work uses β€” reading numbers and measurements, time and conversions, and the money side of the job.

Module 4 Β· Professionalism, Readiness & Next Steps

Build professionalism and ethics in care, learn how to study for the CNA competency exam, and make your own plan.

This is an Integrated Education & Training (IET) bridge β€” a contextualized on-ramp to occupational CNA training. It pairs especially well with Math & Numeracy, Workforce Readiness, and Career Exploration & Pathways. It is not the CNA certification and not official exam prep β€” verify all requirements with your state's nursing/health authority and an approved training program.

🎯 Standards Alignment

This course is designed as an Integrated Education & Training (IET) bridge useful to programs funded under WIOA Title II (the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act). IET combines adult education and literacy, workforce-preparation activities, and occupational training in a single, contextualized program β€” here, the adult-education and workforce-prep components for the healthcare/CNA pathway.

  • WIOA IET & workforce preparation: contextualized reading, medical vocabulary and numeracy, following procedures, communication, professionalism, and self-management
  • CCRS β€” College & Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (reading informational/technical text such as care plans, labels, and procedures; mathematical practices)
  • NRS β€” supports Educational Functioning Levels (ABE/ASE) and Measurable Skill Gains reporting
  • Northstar Digital Literacy β€” where lessons involve electronic health records, online applications, or scheduling tools

Framework-general; frameworks (WIOA/AEFLA/CCRS/NRS/Northstar) apply nationally. This is a foundations/prep bridge β€” not the CNA certification, not official competency-exam prep, and not a substitute for a state-approved CNA program, clinical hours, the competency exam, or a background check. All practice items are original and target underlying reading/vocabulary/math skills. Medication administration is beyond CNA scope and is not taught here; nothing here is medical advice. Verify current requirements with your state's nursing/health authority (e.g., the nurse aide registry) and an approved program, and confirm program specifics with the Nevada Department of Education / CRAELO and your state's WIOA plan.

🧭 How to Study This Course

  1. One lesson at a time, in order. There's no clock on you. The skills build on each other.
  2. Connect it to real care. Every lesson uses real healthcare vocabulary, procedures, and numbers β€” picture yourself doing the work with compassion.
  3. Keep one folder. Start a "My Healthcare Career Plan" folder (paper or digital). Each lesson adds a page, and together they become your capstone plan.
  4. Use official sources. Check CNA requirements with your state's nursing/health authority (nurse aide registry) and an approved program. This bridge builds skills; those are the authorities.
  5. Keep the journal. Five minutes of reflection after each lesson doubles what you remember.
  6. Ask for help. American Job Centers, community colleges, and approved CNA programs offer help and sometimes funding. Using them is smart.

🧠 A word before you begin

Caring for others when they are most vulnerable is some of the most meaningful work there is β€” and the skills to get there are learnable, one step at a time. If reading clinical words or doing the math has felt hard before, that's exactly what this bridge is for. Add the word yet: "I don't know these medical terms yet." Let's get you ready to care. 🌱
